During a time when so much of our country seems to be divided over issues, there is a book out that is uniting readers and inviting them into a deeper conversation about race and friendship.
We Are Not Like Them authors Christine Pride and Jo Piazza will be featured Tuesday night at Arts & Letters Live at the Dallas Museum of Art.
The book has captured the attention of the nation. It was featured as October's book of the month from Good Morning America. The authors say there are now thousands of book clubs who have explored their brave work.
Pride and Piazza were already working on the book before the murder of George Floyd in May of 2020. But that moment, and other racial controversies, have heightened the need for a book that explores the complicated times.
A release on the book describes the narrative:
"Jen and Riley have remained best friends since kindergarten, though their lives have taken different directions. Jen married young and is finally pregnant, while Riley pursued her childhood dream of becoming a television journalist. But the deep bond they share is severely tested when Jen’s husband, a city police officer, is involved in the shooting of an unarmed Black teenager. We Are Not Like Them explores complex questions of race and how they pervade and shape our most intimate spaces in a deeply divided world. But at its heart, it’s a story of enduring friendship—a love that defies the odds even as it faces its most difficult challenges."
There are multiple ways (in person and online) to join tonight’s Arts and Letters Live conversation with Christine and Jo at the DMA.
