UT Southwestern is deepening its commitment to breaking new ground in total brain health, with the announcement of a $1 billion fund for its brain institute in Dallas.

UT Southwestern raised more than $500 million to support research, technology enhancements, and faculty recruitment. Another $500 million has been invested in facilities and programs for its O’Donnell Brain Institute.

As part of the facility upgrades, UT Southwestern is opening the nine-story Peter O'Donnell Jr. Biomedical Research Building this year. It will drastically expand laboratory space for brain research.

"This is truly a tremendous investment and tremendous opportunity to change the lives of people who are suffering with brain disease," said Dr. William Dauer, director of the Peter O’Donnell Jr. Brain Institute at UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Dr. Dauer said that the Peter O’Donnell Jr. Brain Institute will tackle brain disease from all angles.

"In doing so, this investment will be used to find both root causes of these illnesses...but also investing in patients who are suffering today by advancing the clinical care of patients," Dr. Dauer added.
