In northeast Fort Worth, State Highway 121 at the 820 underpass will not be the place to be this weekend.
TxDOT crews will be demolishing the old southbound 820 bridge over State Highway 121 this weekend.
As a result, 121 in both directions in that location will be closed for the entire weekend.
"Traffic is already on the new facility, and so we have to demolish the old facility," said Val Lopez, spokesman, Fort Worth Division of TxDOT. "It's over state highway 121. And so for motorists safety, we can't demolish the bridge over live traffic."
The closure begins at 9:00 p.m. Friday night and is scheduled to end by rush hour Monday morning.
"There will be a marked detour," Lopez said. "But they have to be patient (and) they have to give themselves extra time to go through there. But otherwise, if you can avoid 121 at 820, you should do so."
This work is part of the massive East Loop 820 project, which among other things will add a direct connector from northbound 820 to westbound 121.
The overall project is on track to be completed by the end of next year.
"The hot, dry weather really isn't good for anything except highway construction," notes Lopez. "We're making pretty good advancement because of that; and weather permitting, we'll be done by the end of 2023."
