Organizers for the annual Wreaths Across America event said they’re hoping Giving Tuesday inspires North Texans to become sponsors for the event.

Each year, volunteers place festive wreaths on the 51,000 headstones at Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery, and others across the country as a way to honor veterans and the sacrifices they made. So far this year they still need more than 15,000 wreaths to be sponsored by individuals ahead of the December 17th event.

Each wreath costs $15, and is grown on farms across the US.

Morril Worcester, a grower in Maine, said trees don’t even need to be cut down to make them. He says they’re “tipped.”

“Once you tip a tree, the tips will re-grow,” Worcester said. “And so every three years you can go back to the same tree and get tips.”

In fact, Worcester said the process is actually beneficial for the trees. “It prunes the tree. And it is just a signal to the tree to recover. And it actually grows more tips the next time than it does the first time,” Worcester said.

This year’s ceremony in North Texas is set for Saturday, December 17th. Volunteers are also needed to place the wreaths and to remove them following the holiday season.

Organizers with Wreaths across America said there’s no better way to honor our real life heroes, and all that they did for our country this holiday season.
