A controversial vote on trans athletes in sports has Texas Democrats breaking ranks with their party.

Representatives Vicente Gonzalez and Henry Cuellar are facing backlash after supporting a trans-athlete ban. The two voted with Republicans on the controversial Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act.

The bill bases gender in sports on biology at birth and has faced fierce opposition from LGBTQ+ advocates. The bill also aims to restrict federal funding for schools that allow trans women to compete in girls' sports.

While Gonzalez and Cuellar are facing flack from their party, they say they’re standing by their communities’ values. The bill now heads to the GOP-controlled Senate. However, Republicans need 60 to vote in favor of the bill. Since Republicans have 53 seats, they'll need to convince seven Democrats to come to their side.
