A total of 23 people have filed to run for the Congressional seat that had been occupied by Ron Wright. The filing deadline was Wednesday at 5 p.m.
Wright, a Republican, was first elected in 2018. The 6th Congressional District stretches from Arlington and parts of Fort Worth south to Waxahachie and Corsicana.
Wright, 67, died February 7. He was being treated for lung cancer and had also contracted COVID-19. Wright was first elected to Congress in 2018.
Governor Greg Abbott has set May 1 for a special election to replace Wright. Early voting starts April 19.
Of the 23 people who filed for the election, 11 are Republicans, ten are Democrats, one is Libertarian and one filed as an independent.
Republicans filing include Wright's widow, Susan Wright. Democrats include Jana Lynn Sanchez, Ron Wright's opponent in 2018.
For the special election, if no candidate wins at least 50% of the vote, the top two candidates, regardless of party, will advance to a run-off.
