Feuding groups of protestors gathered today outside the Allen ISD administration building.
The first group arrived in the morning to protest the district’s COVID-19 policies. The AISD is not requiring students to wear masks, in compliance with Governor Greg Abbott’s executive order, and it’s only offering in-person learning. Protestors say that is unacceptable.
“Kids without the vaccines— we don’t want to risk their lives,” one protestor says. She says the group believes neighboring districts like Frisco and Dallas are doing more to protect students by going against the governor’s orders and mandating masks, and it wants the Allen ISD to do the same.
The group asked to speak with school administrators, but nobody came to hear them out. They wrote their grievances on the back of one of their pro-mask signs and left it at the administration building.
“I feel there’s no transparency on what the school is doing. We want contact tracing back. We want to know what’s happening,” one protestor said. “I hope we can get through to them.”
Shortly after the group of protestors left, another group showed up … to voice their support of the district’s COVID policies.
“They made a courageous decision based on science and common sense,” one supporter said.
The group says they’re proud of their district for following the governor’s order when others aren’t. They believe kids should have the choice to mask up if they want to. One protestor, who is a student herself, says masks negatively impact her school day.
“It’s harder to learn and is really annoying,” she said.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the district had not acknowledged either group.
