If you need a smoke alarm or two, or three for your house and you can't afford them, the American Red Cross has a deal for you.
As part of the ninth annual Sound The Alarm initiative, the American Red Cross is going to homes coast to coast and is giving away smoke detectors and installing them for free.
It goes without saying that having working smoke detectors inside your home is crucial.
"The average is, you have two minutes from that time that alarm goes off to get out of the house to be able to do so safely," says Brian Murnahan with the Red Cross of North Texas. "So time is of the essence."
While this program is geared towards low-income households, there are no requirements of any kind to obtain a free smoke detector through this initiative.
"All you have to do is go up to our website, redcross.org/northtexas, and they sign up for a free fire alarm -- really as many as they need in their home -- and we come out and install them for them and during the month of May," says Murnahan. "The program is geared towards folks that don't have the smoke alarms or don't have the ability to put smoke alarms in their homes, but we're not going to ask any questions. So if you need them, we're there." (Please turn underlined web address into a link)
The deadline to sign up for a free smoke detector is the end of next week; installations will take place between May 6 and May 22 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Murnahan says he's hoping for a big year this year.
"We're trying to have a total impact of about 5,000 here in the DFW area," Murnahan says.
