American Airlines is partnering with U.S. Customs and Border Protection on a new program aimed at speeding up international travel.

The Fort Worth-based airline said it was launching a "groundbreaking" initiative that would allow international travelers to go straight from one flight to the next without picking up and re-checking their luggage. The program will be launched only a route from Sydney, Australia to Los Angeles, but American Airlines said it hoped to expand the plan to other airports.

American said the program allows travelers to move directly from customs to the TSA security checkpoint, streamlining inspections while maintaining safety.
