It was unanimous approval from the Arlington City Council for major renovations to the Texas Rangers' old ballpark, now called Choctaw Stadium.

The plan calls for adding 6,000 square feet of commercial space on the west side of Choctaw Stadium along the Nolan Ryan Expressway.

Rob Matwick with the Rangers, which still manage their former ballpark, says it will also include space to enhance public safety with spots for police and fire departments.

The city of Arlington will put $4.2 million towards the renovation project. It's unclear how much money the Rangers are adding. Matwick says work won't begin for another few months.

"We're coming in and repurposing this stadium so that people can continue to enjoy the stadium by enjoying restaurants, and retail, and everything like that," said Arlington Mayor Jim Ross.

The plan will also include hundreds of new parking spaces in preparation for the FIFA World Cup and NCAA Men's Final Four.
