Arlington Police use modified squad cars to catch dangerous drivers

ARLINGTON (1080 KRLD)- Police in Arlington are using a new tactic to catch reckless drivers on the city's freeways. They have deployed two patrol cars with modified paint jobs that will be more difficult for those drivers to detect.

"What we've found is that when we're in our blue-and-whites, when you have aggressive drivers come up behind you they spot you about a mile away...and they're going to slow down," said Arlington Police Lt. Christopher Cook. "But with the subdued graphics, it's too late - they pass by us. We've already had a few successes. We think that will deter some of the  road rage and aggressive driving that we see too much of in north Texas."

The two traffic patrol vehicles have been painted a solid blue with modified graphics. They are still identifiable as Arlington Police vehicles. The department will use them on I-20, I-30, SH 360 and Highway 287.

"it's designed to deter egregious driving behavior such as excessive speeding, racing, driving on the shoulder and   unsafe lane changes," said Lt. Cook. "We had a vehicle driving 110 miles per hour pass one of the officers driving this car, so they got stopped and got a pretty hefty ticket. That's who we're going after."
