Arlington sees violent, bloody start to the new year

ARLINGTON (1080 KRLD) - There were several shootings overnight in Arlington, and police say it looks like most of them were caused by celebratory gunfire.

Around 6 p.m. last night, police say a woman was shot accidentally by her boyfriend at the Las Lomas Apartments. When officers went to investigate, a group of people started shooting nearby. Officers ran outside, police say, and the group started firing in their direction. A security guard was grazed by a bullet.

"Their story is that they came out on New Year's Eve because they wanted to fire their gun off to celebrate," says Lt. Chris Cook with the Arlington Police Department. "We talk about this every year-- it's so dangerous."

Three people were taken into custody, but police say the shooter managed to slip away.

And the shooting didn't stop there. Two people were killed by celebratory gunfire overnight in Arlington. Both calls came in around 12:30 a.m., both at apartment complexes. Police say at one, a woman's boyfriend accidentally shot her in the head while ringing in the new year. The woman died and the boyfriend fled the scene ... he's still at large.

The other shooting involved a 4-year-old child, who was shot in the head by someone dancing with a gun. The child was rushed to the hospital, but he did not survive. Police say the suspect lived with the child, though their relationship is unclear, and confessed to accidentally shooting him. He's in police custody.

"It's very sad," says Cook. "It's certainly not the way we wanted to start 2021."
