According to the CDC, Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is up to 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. It is a major contributor to fatal and nonfatal overdoses in the U.S.
There are two types of fentanyl: pharmaceutical fentanyl and illegally made fentanyl. Both are considered synthetic opioids.
It is often added to other drugs because of its extreme potency, which makes drugs cheaper, more powerful, more addictive, and more dangerous.
In Dallas, 18 new billboards have been strategically placed, featuring the image of fentanyl victim Sammy Chapman. It's a project sponsored by Rachel’s Angels, a nonprofit that seeks to prevent drug-related deaths among kids.
This is part of a nationwide effort to educate the public about the dangers of fentanyl.
Sam Chapman is Sammy's father. He joined us on the KRLD Afternoon News.
