The ball at the top of Reunion Tower in downtown Dallas is getting an upgrade. Crew have installed hundreds of new lights. They are replacing the lighting system that has been in place since 2012.

"All 259 lights have been swapped out with a new version that we created completely custom for the tower," Reunion Tower Director of Operations Shawn Miller said.

The new LED lights are a significant improvement over the old system.

"They're lighter weight. They have new technology," Miller said. "We added 32 new pixels to each node so you'll be able to see some effects when you get closer to the ball that we've never been able to do before."

The old system mixed three colors - red, green, and blue - to create lighting designs on the ball. The new system adds an extra feature.

"By adding a dedicated 'white'...now its RGBW, that gives you the ability to soften some colors," Miller said. "We can do different versions of colors."

Fourteen people worked on building and testing the new lights and electronics. The staff at Reunion Tower is already working on programming new light shows to take advantage of the new technology.
