DALLAS-FORT WORTH — Thousands of North Texas students and teachers are returning to the classroom Monday morning as public school districts across the Metroplex officially launch the 2026–2027 academic year.
According to district announcements, Fort Worth, DeSoto, and Garland Independent School Districts welcome students back on Monday, Aug. 10. The first wave of arrivals brings heavy traffic back to neighborhood streets and school zones across Tarrant and Dallas counties.
For Fort Worth ISD, the state’s fifth-largest school district, Monday marks a significant milestone under Texas Education Agency oversight following administrative changes implemented earlier this year. According to WFAA reports, Fort Worth ISD officials announced on Sunday that the district managed to fill every teaching position ahead of the first day, starting the academic year with zero teacher vacancies.
A second wave of North Texas school districts opens Tuesday, Aug. 11. According to official district calendars, students in Dallas, Plano, Carrollton-Farmers Branch, Grand Prairie, Irving, Mesquite, and Lake Worth ISDs will resume classes on Tuesday morning.
Police departments across the Metroplex remind motorists that school zone speed limits are back in effect during morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal hours.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation, drivers face enhanced fines for speeding in active school zones or illegally passing stopped school buses with flashing red lights. Law enforcement agencies in Dallas and Fort Worth confirm increased patrol units around campus perimeter streets to enforce traffic safety laws throughout the opening week.
