The Texas Advocacy Project is asking for backpack donations to kick off its 11th annual Backpacks for Hope Campaign.

“Providing a backpack to a student is so comforting to them,” says Heather Bellino, with the Texas Advocacy Project. “If you can remember when you carried your first backpack into the classroom, or every year when you got your brand new one … we all stood a little taller, we were all a little prouder.”

Bellino says most of the children getting the backpacks are survivors of domestic abuse, and in addition to school supplies, the backpacks will contain information on how to access TAP’s free legal and social services, as well as their phone number and safety planning information.

This year’s goal is to collect 1,900 backpacks for children living in shelters.

“They’ll be able to start the school year like every other kid,” Bellino says. “With something on their shoulders, and a way to feel like every other kid in the classroom.”

You can donate until the July 22nd. More information about drop-off locations, donations and supply wish lists can be found here.
