This year’s butter sculpture at the State Fair of Texas is certainly a sight to behold.
The piece shows Big Tex celebrating his 70th birthday with a big, buttery cake. Beside that is a sculpture of a globe with the United States and Texas popping out of the front. It was sculpted by Tom Roberts, who typically works with bronze. The most challenging part?
“Being cold,” Roberts says. “I got so chilled I was shaking and I got out and I noticed I had icicles on my eyebrows.”
He says he’s happy with how it turned out, but like any artist, he tortures himself about the things he could have done better.
“This is the best one yet,” one woman said to Roberts as she snapped a picture of the sculpture.
“I had a ball making it,” Roberts said “I really did.
Roberts says it took him about 250 hours total to plan and sculpt the piece.
