Big Tex getting new wardrobe

DALLAS — The 55-foot ambassador of Texas hospitality is getting a fresh wardrobe this fall.

The State Fair of Texas has announced Cavender’s Boot City as the Official Western Wear Store of Big Tex starting with the 2026 season. As part of the partnership, the Tyler-based retailer collaborated on a new design for Big Tex’s signature Western shirt and brought along legendary Texas hatmaker Resistol to craft his iconic 95-gallon cowboy hat.

The collaboration brings together three Texas institutions deeply committed to preserving Lone Star culture, traditions, and craftsmanship.

A Heritage Partnership Built for the Fairgrounds

For more than 60 years, Cavender’s has grown from a single store in Pittsburg, Texas—founded in 1965 by James and Pat Cavender—into a national Western wear powerhouse. Today, the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame inductee operates more than 130 locations across 19 states while actively supporting rodeos and youth athletic programs across Texas.

"Big Tex has long represented the spirit, hospitality, and traditions that make Texas unique," said Jennifer Schuder, Senior Vice President of Customer Engagement for the State Fair of Texas. "Partnering with Cavender’s and Resistol brings together two Texas brands that authentically represent the Western heritage, craftsmanship, and pride that Big Tex has embodied for generations."

For Cavender’s leadership, the chance to dress the state’s most famous cowboy is a milestone moment.

Resistol Comes Full Circle at Fair Park

Completing Big Tex’s refreshed look is Garland-based hatmaker Resistol. Founded in Dallas in 1927, Resistol has spent nearly a century making cowboy hats worn by working ranchers, rodeo champions, and cultural icons such as George Strait and John Wayne.

The announcement carries significant history: Resistol originally introduced its very first Western cowboy hat at the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition right inside Fair Park. Outfitting Big Tex nearly 90 years later marks a full-circle moment for the iconic brand.
