Camp Mystic summer camp and its affiliates filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Wednesday, nearly a year after devastating flash floods killed 28 people at the Texas Hill Country facility.

The all-girls Christian summer camp near Hunt, Texas, along the Guadalupe River, sought reorganization in federal court following the July 4, 2025 tragedy. Court documents list estimated assets between $100,000 and $500,000 and liabilities between $10 million and $50 million. Affiliates include Mystic Camps Family Partnership, Natural Fountains Properties and Mystic Camps Management.

In the early morning hours of July 4, 2025, flash flooding overwhelmed the camp, sweeping away 25 young girls, two counselors and director Dick Eastland. Eastland died while trying to save campers. A subsequent Texas legislative report found the camp lacked adequate emergency plans and failed to evacuate despite storm warnings.

The bankruptcy filing comes after the camp withdrew its application to reopen for summer 2026. It provides an automatic stay that halts most lawsuits and collection actions while the organization reorganizes and negotiates with creditors, including families of the victims.

The tragedy prompted widespread scrutiny of camp safety standards and emergency preparedness in flood-prone areas. State lawmakers conducted investigations and site visits. The camp's chief health officer at the time lost her nursing license following the events.

The Guadalupe River location in Kerr County has long been popular for summer camps, but the 2025 floods highlighted vulnerabilities in the region.

Camp Mystic has not issued a public statement on the filing as of Thursday morning. The case will now move through federal bankruptcy court.
