Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD is considering closing four schools due to a $19 million budget shortfall and declining enrollment.
The schools under consideration for closure are Furneaux Elementary, McCoy Elementary, Central Elementary, and Long Middle School.
The district hopes to save $9 million in the first year by eliminating over 2,300 empty seats. Parents and community members have voiced concerns about the closures, particularly the impact on high-performing schools and gifted programs.
The district plans to hold community meetings to address these concerns and gather feedback.
The final decision will be made during the March 7 board meeting. If approved, staff from the closed schools will be reassigned to other positions within the district.
The district is also considering repurposing some of the closed campuses for other uses, such as Pre-K centers or temporary classrooms.
This move is part of a larger effort to address financial, infrastructure, and enrollment challenges facing the district.
The district's long-term planning aims to ensure a sustainable future for its students and staff.
