It looks like they've found part of an estimated 1,000 pound meteorite seen streaking through the south Texas skies on February 15th.

The reported sonic boom created by the meteorite shocked thousands of people, prompting numerous 9-1-1 calls in McAllen, Alton, Mission and a number of other Rio Grande Valley communities.

Many observers thought it landed near McAllen. Now, the American Meteorological Society has posted a photo it claims is part of the meteorite. It's black and irregularly shaped and it came to rest in a sandy patch in some scrub brush.

Reports of its size vary but some estimates put it around a pound or two. NASA figures the original meteorite weighed about a thousand pounds when it entered the Earth's atmosphere but it broke up into smaller bits.

In addition to the one that landed in south Texas, two other chunks have been found, so far one in France and one in Italy. The country, not the town.
