Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated epic *The Odyssey* arrives in theaters July 17 as the first feature-length film shot entirely on IMAX film cameras, offering North Texas moviegoers a rare chance to experience cinema at its grandest scale.
The mythic adventure, starring Matt Damon as Odysseus, was captured using groundbreaking IMAX technology across global locations. Nolan, known for pushing film formats in movies like Oppenheimer and Dunkirk, collaborated with cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema to shoot the entire project on large-format IMAX film for unmatched detail and immersion.
In the DFW area, fans can see it in premium IMAX at Cinemark Dallas & IMAX (one of the few local venues equipped for full 70mm IMAX presentations). Only a limited number of theaters worldwide — roughly 40 to 50 — can screen the film exactly as Nolan intended in the highest-fidelity IMAX 70mm format. Most other screens will show digital IMAX or standard versions, which still deliver a powerful experience but lose some of the original’s breathtaking scope.
The release marks a milestone for film enthusiasts, highlighting the ongoing revival of large-format cinema amid streaming’s rise. Local audiences can expect sold-out shows at premium locations, with tickets already in high demand.
Nolan’s commitment to practical filmmaking and theatrical exhibition continues to draw crowds back to the big screen, boosting community interest in experiential entertainment across North Texas.
