A Florida high school senior graduated with a record-breaking 11.99 weighted GPA, prompting Hillsborough County Public Schools to change how it calculates grade point averages for future classes.
Vaibhav Bhaskar finished as valedictorian at Steinbrenner High School in Lutz this year. He achieved the extraordinary mark by taking 20 Advanced Placement classes and completing 24 Dual Enrollment college courses through the University of Florida’s online program, enough to earn an associate’s degree.
The district’s previous policy awarded bonus points beyond the standard 4.0 scale for AP and Dual Enrollment courses, allowing highly motivated students like Bhaskar to push GPAs well above 10.0. Hillsborough County school board members recently voted to implement a cap on GPAs, effective for next year’s graduating class. The change aligns the system more closely with practices used by most other Florida districts and colleges nationwide.
School officials noted that unusually high GPAs required college admissions officers to recalculate them, potentially disadvantaging local students. The old system also encouraged some students to overload on online courses, leading to concerns about stress and mental health.
Bhaskar’s accomplishment highlighted both the strengths and limitations of the prior weighting formula. His success demonstrated exceptional academic dedication but also underscored how the policy could create records unlikely to be matched under standard scales.
The new cap ensures future valedictorians will be evaluated on a more uniform system while still rewarding rigorous coursework. Current high school students, including the Class of 2027 and beyond, will follow the updated calculation.
Hillsborough County serves more than 200,000 students across the Tampa Bay area. The policy shift aims to better prepare graduates for postsecondary opportunities without inflating metrics beyond national norms.
