Civic leader investing generations of teachers and students

He's investing in education in the Dallas ISD - not just for his kids but for future generations. Here's this week's KRLD Difference Maker.

Small business owner Jimmy Tran is an engaged civic leader whose passion is education.

"I think that education is probably the most important thing in our city," Jimmy said. "I attended this current and past mayor panel and every single one identified education as the number one thing that we can do advance our city and ensure success in 20 years."

He even moved his three kids from private to public schools in the Dallas ISD.

"As people that are civically engaged and plugged into the city of Dallas, we just honestly felt like we could make more of a difference and drive more change and set our kids up for success by having them experience both [public and private schools]," Jimmy said. "We joined [PL Prep] and that community. We love the diversity, the dual language program, the pre-k program and also the 50/50 model, which is basically a school where half the students come from above the poverty line and half the students come from below the poverty line. When we joined we said, 'What can we do to support this school?'"

Jimmy is now a founder and current Board Chair of Friends of PL Prep - a non-profit that raises funds to support Personalized Learning Preparatory School at Sam Houston.

"What we do at PL Prep is raise awareness and support for the school backed by a 501(c)3 and the money that we raise gets funneled back into our little school," Jimmy said.

Their initiatives will support teachers and students for generations to come.

Friends of PL Prep funded an innovation hub at the school in hopes of getting students more exposure to STEM with state-of-the-art equipment, STEM kits, robotics kits, and more. Every student and class has access to the innovation hub.

"The second thing that we have funded, that I'm really proud of, is we have funded teacher learning and development," Jimmy said. "We have funded the opportunity for our teachers to get advanced training and certification. They get 3 credit course hours at Texas Tech University and we have partnered with Texas Tech to deliver this personalized learning curriculum."

We're proud to call Jimmy Tran and Friends of PL Prep this week's KRLD Difference Maker.
