The mother of Highland Park High School and Los Angeles Dodgers great Clayton Kershaw died over the weekend.
One day before Mother's Day, Kershaw's wife Ellen, mentioned the death of her mother-in-law Saturday during remarks at the dedication of a youth ball field funded in part by Kershaw's Challenge, a foundation backed by the Kershaws.
Ellen Kershaw gave Clayton's mom Marianne Tombaugh the credit for cultivating her son's love for baseball as he grew up in Highland Park after his parents divorced, "moving mountains" as a single mom to make sure he made it to his practices and games.
The Dodgers say Kershaw will make his scheduled start against Minnesota Tuesday and then will possibly take some bereavement leave.
The cause of Tombaugh's death has not been revealed. Clayton's father, Christopher Kershaw, died in 2013.
