CNBC has ranked Texas the second-worst state to live in for 2026, drawing criticism from state leaders and residents who point to strong population growth as evidence of its appeal. The business news outlet placed the Lone Star State just behind Tennessee in its annual quality-of-life assessment, part of the broader America’s Top States for Business study released this week.
Texas earned 78 out of 290 possible points, receiving an F grade. The ranking considered factors including crime rates, air quality, healthcare access, worker protections, inclusiveness laws, childcare costs, and reproductive rights. CNBC highlighted Texas’ highest uninsured rate in the nation at 16.7 percent — more than double the national average — and its last-place ranking in primary care physicians per capita. More than 17 percent of Texas adults reported skipping a needed doctor visit in the past year due to cost.
The list of 10 worst states consisted entirely of Republican-led states. Critics, including conservative commentators and officials, mocked the results on social media, noting that many of these states lead in net migration. Texas added over 67,000 residents recently, according to Census data, while states like California and New York continue to see population losses.
CNBC defended its methodology, emphasizing data-driven analysis amid growing emphasis on quality of life for business decisions. The category now accounts for 11.6 percent of a state’s overall business climate score. Proponents of the ranking argue it reflects real challenges in healthcare and policy areas, while detractors say it penalizes conservative governance on issues like bathroom bills and abortion restrictions.
For Texas families and leaders, the report underscores ongoing debates about healthcare access and economic growth. State officials continue to promote Texas as a destination for businesses and residents seeking lower taxes and job opportunities despite the critique.
