A Collin County man who killed his ex-girlfriend's father will not get a new trial after an appeals court has taken a second look at his first trial and come up with the same conclusion.

Christopher Holder is doing a life with parole sentence for the November 2012 murder of Bill Tanner. His lifeless body was found in his east Plano home.

Reports say Tanner had been beaten and stabbed at least 20-times, then the house was set on fire to cover the crime.

Police quickly traced the case to Holder who had once dated Tanner's daughter and had even lived in the home for a while.

Cell phone records used in the trial confirmed Tanner was in the area at the time of the crime.

A Collin County jury found Holder guilty of capital murder but an unrelated US Supreme Court ruling in another case raised a question about whether Holder's trial was fair.

That resulted in an appeals court in Dallas taking another look at the case and deciding the conviction and sentence should stand.
