A Dallas mother was sentenced to 25 years in prison after a Collin County jury convicted her of murder for leaving her 15-month-old child in a hot car in Frisco last summer.
Vanessa Esquivel, 28, was sentenced Friday, June 19, 2026, following the jury’s guilty verdict the previous day. The child died after being left alone in a vehicle for about two hours in the 3200 block of Preston Road while Esquivel was at work, according to Frisco police. Temperatures that day reached at least 95 degrees, and the car had no working air conditioning.
Esquivel was arrested in August 2025 and charged with murder after investigators determined she intentionally left the toddler in the vehicle. She pleaded not guilty but was convicted by the jury. The sentence was handed down by the jury itself under Texas law for the murder conviction.

The case drew attention to the dangers of leaving children unattended in vehicles during hot weather. Frisco police have long warned about the risks, noting that even on milder days, car interiors can quickly reach lethal temperatures. No other injuries were reported in the incident.
The tragedy underscores ongoing efforts by local law enforcement and safety advocates to prevent similar incidents through education and awareness campaigns.
Esquivel remains in custody pending transfer to state prison to begin serving her sentence.
