North Texas lawmakers were among the elected officials who questioned the Secret Service director on Monday in the wake of the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle appeared before the House Oversight Committee on Monday. U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crocket (D-Dallas) questioned Cheatle about gun control and said she objected when the Texas legislature made Texas an open carry state.

"I had, I think, almost every major law enforcement agency come forward and say that they were against permitless carry because they said that their jobs would be made more difficult," Crockett said. "Unfortunately, my colleagues on the other side of the aisle in the state of Texas decided that they would ignore those warnings, and they passed the law instead. And right after they passed that law, we ended up with Uvalde."

U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Waco) said he wanted more answers from Cheatle, who was appointed Secret Service director in September 2022.

"I've heard you say today numbers of times. Well, you've got to wait. Well, you've got to wait. Wait for the final report," Sessions said. "When is the final final going to happen? How long do we have to wait before you can give us credible answers? You've been there 28 years."

Before her appointment, Cheatle served as senior director in global security at PepsiCo. Before that, she spent 27 years in the U.S. Secret Service, most recently as assistant director of the Office of Protective Operations.

Republicans and Democrats are calling on Cheatle to resign.
