Dallas Animal Services is warning residents of a phone scam targeting pet owners, with callers falsely claiming to represent the department in an effort to extort money.

Scammers reportedly contact individuals and claim their lost pet is in DAS care and requires expensive, life-saving surgery. Victims are then asked to send payment via mobile cash apps. DAS clarified that it does not have an "Urgent Care Team" and does not accept payments through such platforms.

Officials urge anyone receiving these calls to avoid providing payment or personal information. Instead, they should report the incident to the Dallas Police Department and notify DAS.

Dallas Animal Services advises pet owners to verify any communication directly with the department and to remain vigilant against potential scams.
