The city of Dallas is turning to an unconventional — and environmentally friendly — solution to combat an invasive plant species: goats.

This week, approximately 250 goats were released into the Bachman Greenbelt to help remove invasive privet plants that officials say are threatening the local ecosystem and nearby communities.

The herd will graze across 16 acres of land over an 11-day period. To ensure the goats graze effectively and safely, an electric fence will be moved daily to guide their progress, and a shepherd will remain on-site around the clock to manage the animals.

City officials say the method offers a natural alternative to using heavy machinery or chemical herbicides and is part of a growing trend of using targeted grazing to manage invasive vegetation.

A similar project was carried out earlier this year in Arlington with positive results.
