Dallas City Council members are pressing the Dallas Mavericks to remain in downtown Dallas rather than relocate to the former Valley View Mall site in far North Dallas.
Several council members, led by Maxie Johnson, held a press conference Thursday urging the team to reconsider its plan to build a new arena and entertainment district at the Valley View location. They emphasized the economic importance of keeping the Mavericks at the American Airlines Center in the heart of downtown but acknowledged that no specific incentive package or plan is currently in place to make that happen.
The Mavericks announced Monday they had secured option agreements for about 104 acres at the former Valley View Mall site, with the goal of opening a new arena by the 2031-32 season when their lease at the American Airlines Center expires. The move would mark the first time in franchise history the team leaves downtown Dallas.
Council Member Johnson, joined by colleagues Lorie Blair and Zarin Gracey, highlighted concerns about the impact on downtown businesses, jobs, and revitalization efforts. The American Airlines Center is also home to the Dallas Stars, who have similarly explored relocation options.
The council’s push comes amid broader discussions about the future of downtown, including ongoing debates over City Hall repairs or redevelopment. Some members see keeping major anchors like the Mavericks as critical to maintaining economic vitality in the core of the city, while others view the Valley View project as a positive for overall growth within Dallas city limits.
The Mavericks have stated that the Valley View site best meets their criteria for development and keeping the team in Dallas. No final agreements have been reached, and the situation remains fluid as the July 1 deadline for certain decisions approaches.
Downtown stakeholders worry about a potential exodus of major attractions, while North Dallas residents see opportunity in the new entertainment district. City officials continue to explore ways to support both areas.
