Dallas city leaders have voted to move forward with plans to rebuild the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center and make updates to Fair Park.

The Dallas city council voted to issue more than $170 million worth of city bonds to begin the process of taking down the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center and rebuild it.

The new building will anchor the new Convention Center District. According to the city of Dallas, it will be "an authentic, walkable Dallas urban experience that will include restaurants, retail, lodging and entertainment."

A ground breaking for the new convention center is scheduled for 2024 with the grand opening planned for 2028.

There's another $50 million bond package to fund repairs and improvements on dozens of buildings at Fair Park.

Voters approved a two percent increase to the city's hotel occupancy tax last year to fund all of the projects.
