Dallas can be a wonderful city to live in, though many would agree that it’s walking and bike trails leave something to be desired.

However, a group of city officials are looking to change that mindset and are updating its master Dallas Bike Plan with a new vision for the city.

According to Community Impact, city planners have four main goals with the Dallas Bike Plan:

-Update the city’s map of the bike network, including on- and off-street bike lanes
-Update the design standards for bike facilities or develop new standards
-Develop a list of prioritized projects and provide detailed guidance on how to implement the top 15 projects
-Educate Dallas residents about the mobility option of cycling and ensure equity

And to do this, they want to update the city’s infrastructure and add an additional 536 miles of bike lanes to the city!

This includes:

-175 miles of bike boulevards
-140 miles of “visually separated” bike lanes, meaning they are separated from car traffic with painted lanes
-91 miles of physically separated bike lanes
-130 miles of bike trails

The final updated Dallas Bike Plan, including the 536 miles of bike lanes, could be adopted by early 2024, though it will be subject to changes from City Council.
