A Dallas-based biotech company says it has made strides toward bringing extinct species back to life — and its next target is the woolly mammoth.
Colossal Biosciences claims it has successfully recreated the dire wolf using DNA extracted from fossils dating back between 11,500 and 72,000 years. The company now hopes to revive the woolly mammoth by 2028.
Founder Ben Lamm recently discussed the effort in an interview with podcaster Joe Rogan, explaining that the project involves collecting ancient DNA and using artificial intelligence and genotyping to map genetic material to the mammoth’s closest living relative.
Lamm said the ultimate goal is not just de-extinction, but to pioneer technologies that could one day benefit human healthcare.
Colossal’s ambitious work has drawn attention from both the scientific community and the public, as researchers explore the ethical and ecological implications of bringing back long-extinct species.
