The Dallas City Council could vote later this month on a resolution aimed at decriminalizing abortion in the city. It's a response to the abortion ban that went into effect in Texas following a U.S. Supreme Court decision in June that overturned the rights that had been established by the Roe vs. Wade case in 1973.

Council Member Adam Bazaldua, who chairs the City Council's Quality of Life Committee, wrote that the resolution would be part of an effort to "push back on egregious legislation out of Austin following SCOTUS’ dangerous ruling in the Dobbs case."

The resolution would direct the Dallas Police Department to make the investigation of any alleged violation of the state's abortion ban the department's lowest priority. It would also prohibit city employees or departments from creating or storing records about someone seeking an abortion.

The resolution is similar to one passed by the City of Austin called the "GRACE Act".  The Denton City Council also passed a similar measure.

The full Dallas City Council could vote on the issue as early as August 10th.
