Suspected Dallas serial killer Billy Chemirmir will not have to worry about the death penalty.

Dallas County District Attorney John Creuzot announced yesterday that he will not seek the death penalty if Chemirmir is convicted in any of the 18 deaths in which he's suspected.

In a statement, Creuzot says he met with the victim's families , telling them he would instead seek two jury trials in hopes of getting two life sentences which would be sequenced in such a way as to make sure "there will be no chance for Mr. Chemirmir to die anywhere except in a Texas prison."

Two years ago, Creuzot's office filed paperwork suggesting he would seek the death penalty.

It's not clear why Creuzot changed his mind.

Prosecutors believe Chemirmir used his experience as a health-care professional to get close to elderly women and smother them before stealing their belongings.

He has been held at the Dallas County Jail for more than three years on a bail of more than $18 million.
