Dallas County officials are bringing in the FBI to help investigate a cybercrime that may have cost taxpayers millions of dollars.
Dallas County Administrator Darryl Martin posted about the incident on the county's website, a Notice of Cyber Crime Event. It happened on October 19.
"On November 17, 2023, Dallas County became aware of a potential fraudulent payment in the amount of $2.4 million dollars unrelated to the October cyber incident," Martin wrote on the website. "All evidence was turned over to the FBI suggesting that Dallas County was the victim of a cybercrime."
Dallas County officials say it appears someone impersonated the e-mail address of an organization that does business with the county. And that communication was enough to convince a yet-to-be-identified employee in the county government to make a wire transfer.
Dallas County Commissioners will discuss a security audit at their meeting today.
