UPDATE: Officials now are saying that Marshawn Kneeland died from an apparent suicide following a police chase in Frisco.
According to reports, DPS Troopers attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation on the northbound lanes of the Dallas North Tollway near Keller Springs Blvd late Wednesday night. The driver refused to stop, resulting in a pursuit with DPS Troopers. However, DPS Troopers lost sight of the vehicle, and the pursuit was terminated.
The vehicle was later located abandoned and had been involved in a crash on the southbound lanes of Dallas Parkway near Warren Parkway. DPS Aircraft and Troopers, along with the Frisco Police Department, searched the immediate area and found the driver, Marshawn Kneeland, of Plano, deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Cowboys organization announced his death early that morning, calling him “a beloved teammate and member of our organization” and sending thoughts and prayers to his girlfriend Catalina and his family.
A second-round pick from Western Michigan Broncos in the 2024 NFL Draft, Kneeland quickly began making his mark in the league.
In his rookie season, he appeared in 11 games, contributing defensively before injuries slowed him.
In 2025 he was playing more regularly and even recovered a blocked punt for his first career touchdown just days before his passing.
Those who knew him say Kneeland was driven, intense, and driven by both family legacy and personal fire. He carried the ashes of his mother on a necklace after she passed away, a symbol of how deeply personal and meaningful his journey to the NFL was.
Though his life and career were cut far too short, the legacy of his effort, passion and promise will not be forgotten by teammates, coaches, and fans alike.
