The City of Dallas is taking applications from companies that want to deploy electric scooters or bicycles for rent.
The city had forced all of the companies offering "dockless vehicles" to remove them from the streets in 2020 after a rash of complaints about accidents, violations of traffic laws and riders leaving the scooters abandoned on sidewalks.
City officials have written new rules to regulate where and how the scooters can be deployed. They were previously popular in downtown and in Uptown.
Dallas will grant permits to a maximum of three companies. They will each be allowed to deploy up to 500 scooters or bicycles for rent to start, although city officials could choose to raise that number during the term of the permit. The city will take applications now through November 4th.
"We have heard from a number of residents and stakeholders who are excited for the program to return, and with the new rules in place we anticipate addressing previous concerns about the program while promoting multi-modal transportation," said City of Dallas Transportation Department Director Ghassan Khankarli.
