A Dallas ISD police officer is undergoing surgery after being shot outside a Northwest Dallas Sam’s Club late Thursday morning, marking one of two separate officer-involved police incidents that occurred less than three miles apart in North Dallas on the same day.

The shooting occurred around 11:00 a.m. in the parking lot of a retail center off Interstate 635 and Midway Road. According to Dallas ISD Police Chief Albert Martinez, 39-year-old Officer Justin Jones was flagged down along I-635 to assist a person in distress. Chief Martinez said Officer Jones picked up the individual to move them away from danger and drove them into the nearby shopping center parking lot.

Upon exiting the vehicle, the suspect opened fire, striking Jones in the lower torso. A responding fellow officer applied a life-saving tourniquet at the scene before emergency medical personnel transported Jones to Parkland Memorial Hospital. District officials confirmed the 16-year veteran underwent emergency surgery and remained in critical but stable condition. Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux confirmed that the suspect was taken into custody at the scene.

Shoppers inside the Sam's Club and neighboring stores were kept under temporary lockdown for roughly 40 minutes while officers secured the area.

Hours earlier, a completely separate police-involved shooting occurred nearby in Melshire Estates. According to the Dallas Police Department, officers initiated a pursuit following an Oak Cliff carjacking in the 3500 block of Sunnyvale Street. The chase ended near Williamstown Road in North Dallas, where a Dallas police officer discharged a firearm as the suspect stopped.

Dallas police confirmed that no officers, suspects, or bystanders were injured in the Oak Cliff pursuit incident, and the suspect was taken into custody.

Both investigations remain active, with the Dallas Police Department directing the investigation into the shooting of Officer Jones.
