The Dallas Mavericks are suing the Dallas Stars, claiming the hockey team violated a long-standing agreement governing the American Airlines Center.

The lawsuit, filed this week, argues that the Stars’ move from Dallas to Frisco in 2003 triggered a clause giving the Mavericks full control of the arena.

According to court documents, the Mavericks allege the Stars have continued to act as co-operators of the venue despite no longer being headquartered in the city.

The dispute also involves the City of Dallas, which the Mavericks say has sided with them in determining that the Stars breached their franchise agreement.

The lawsuit comes as both teams prepare for major renovations to the downtown arena, which has served as their shared home since it opened in 2001.
