Dallas City Hall

Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson is calling on City Council members to set aside divisions and work together on the future of City Hall as the city faces significant challenges.

In remarks delivered Wednesday during a council briefing, Johnson warned that “the knives are out for Dallas” following recent announcements that the Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Stars plan to build new arenas north of the city. He urged council members to present a united front on whether to repair the aging downtown building or pursue other options.

Consultants recently presented updated estimates showing it would cost between $532 million and $611 million to repair and modernize the iconic I.M. Pei-designed City Hall over the next decade. A full rehabilitation to modern standards could reach $900 million to $1.14 billion over 20 years. The nearly 50-year-old building has faced ongoing maintenance issues, including leaks and outdated systems.

The discussion comes at a critical time for downtown Dallas. The Mavericks have secured land at the former Valley View Mall site in North Dallas for a new arena district, while the Stars signed a letter of intent for a major project in Plano. Both teams currently play at the American Airlines Center.

Johnson emphasized the need for collaboration, stating the city is in a competitive environment with surrounding communities. He has not yet taken a firm position on whether to stay in the current building or relocate operations.

City leaders continue to evaluate options, including full repair versus new construction or relocation. The decision will have long-term implications for downtown vitality, city operations, and taxpayer dollars.
