DALLAS — A novel approach to public education is making its Texas debut this school year with the launch of The Museum School of East Dallas.
Founded by veteran educator and superintendent Loren Colman, the tuition-free public charter school flips traditional classroom learning on its head by utilizing an immersive, hands-on museum model.
Active, Real-World Learning
Instead of relying on textbooks or static lectures, students will spend time directly in the community interacting with artifacts, art, and environments.
"Think about, instead of looking at a painting on a PowerPoint, we are actually going to the museum in person, standing in front of the painting, looking at it, and really getting to take that hands-on learning to the next level," said Colman.
The school has already established partnerships with local cultural institutions, including:
- The Dallas Arboretum (where students will spend their entire first week of school)
- The Dallas Museum of Art (DMA)
- Trinity River Audubon Center
- The Perot Museum of Nature and Science
High Demand and Community Support
Despite being in its first year, enrollment has surged. The school opened with 156 students in kindergarten through 8th grade, with plans to expand to 450 students within five years.
According to Texas Education Agency (TEA) officials, the school boasts one of the highest opening enrollments for any new starting charter school in Texas over the last five years.
Standards & Funding
As a free public charter school, The Museum School of East Dallas receives state funding and meets all standard TEA academic and state-testing requirements. However, charter schools do not receive local tax funds for facilities or transportation, requiring significant community grassroots fundraising to get the doors open.
Colman, a Dallas-area native with 20 years of experience as a special education teacher and principal, says the goal is simple: restore joy and curiosity to learning while maintaining rigorous academic standards.
