The city of Dallas paid employees more than $140 million in overtime last year, according to an analysis of records.
The Dallas Morning News examined records from 2022 and 2023 and found that most of that overtime pay went to the police and fire departments.
The police department is 500 officers short of full staffing, so officers have to put in overtime hours in order to ensure the city is patrolled around the clock, Chief Eddie Garcia said.
According to the Morning News' analysis, overtime pay last year was up from $128 million in 2022. The highest paid employee in the police department last year wasn't Garcia, but a sergeant who made $300,000 - more than half of which was overtime pay.
