DALLAS (1080 KRLD)- Dallas ISD confirms police responded to a shooting at Wilmer-Hutchins High School in which one student shot another in the leg, Friday morning.
Shortly before 11 a.m. Friday, Dallas police responded to a shooting call while Dallas Fire Rescue confirmed shortly after that a wounded student had been transported to a hospital.
Dallas ISD Superintendent spoke to the media around 2:30 p.m. to confirm that a student shot another in the upper leg in a classroom setting. She said the student was transported to the hospital with a non-life-threatening injury.
The adult teacher in the classroom helped subdue the suspect and helped 'avoid additional tragedy,' says the superintendent. The teacher was able to persuade the student to exit the school and away from others.
Dallas police confirmed the suspect is a student who used a handgun and was placed under arrest outside of the school. Both the suspect and the victim are believed to be around 17 years of age, though no other details have been released.
The motive for the shooting is unknown as well as how the handgun got into the classroom. Police will continue to investigate at this time.
Around 12:30 p.m. police allowed parents to go on campus grounds and meet with their children. Wilmer Hutchins HS organized lines to identify children and parents. 10 minutes later, students were coming out of the school.
Some parents were very upset before the actual reunification process began. Students were in lockdown for over an hour while police secured the grounds at Wilmer Hutchins High School.
Parents have continued to expressed their concerns with how the school handled this.
