Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux says he turned down a $25 million offer from federal authorities to have his department partner more closely with ICE.

Comeaux made the announcement during a Tuesday meeting of the Community Police Oversight Board, stating the decision was his and citing the department’s priority of addressing violent crime and reducing 911 response times.

The offer would have involved Dallas joining the federal 287(g) program, a collaboration that allows local police to enforce certain immigration laws under federal supervision.

Comeaux emphasized that Dallas police currently have “very little interaction” with immigration enforcement, and that joining such a program could blur lines of authority and affect community trust.

Local advocates and board members have in recent months pressed for more transparency on Dallas’s relationship with ICE.
