Dallas police shot and killed a man Sunday night after responding to a report of someone threatening self-harm at an apartment complex in the Oak Lawn neighborhood.

The incident happened shortly after 7:30 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 5100 block of Lemmon Avenue. According to Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux, officers were dispatched to the scene for a welfare check involving a man who was reported to be threatening to harm himself.

Police said officers knocked on the apartment door and the man opened it while holding a box cutter. Investigators said the man appeared agitated and was yelling toward someone inside the apartment.

Chief Comeaux said the man then charged toward the officers, prompting them to open fire. The man was struck in the torso and officers immediately rendered medical aid before he was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

No officers were injured in the shooting, and no other injuries were reported. The man’s identity has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.

Multiple Dallas police units responded to the scene, and a large police presence was visible in the area as investigators processed evidence and interviewed witnesses. The shooting occurred near the Highland Park West Lemmon shopping center, drawing attention from nearby residents and businesses.

As with all officer-involved shootings, the incident is being investigated by the Dallas Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit and the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office. The officers involved have not been publicly identified.
