Dallas police are holding their annual memorial ceremony near City Hall this morning to honor officers who have given their lives in the line of duty.
The event opened with a march from the Dallas Convention Center to the Dallas Police Memorial west of City Hall. A full honors ceremony followed, concluding with a 21-gun salute and a flyover by the department’s Air1 helicopter unit. Ceremonial gunfire and amplified sound are part of the program.
Road closures began at 11:30 a.m. to accommodate the service and are affecting downtown commuters and visitors. Streets closed include Griffin Street from Ceremonial Drive to Young Street (reopens at noon), Young Street from Griffin Street to Akard Street (reopens at noon), Marilla Street from Young Street to Akard Street (reopens at 3 p.m.), and South Akard Street from Young Street to Marilla Street (closed 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.). The City Hall garage is closed to the public and open only to city employees.
The Dallas Police Memorial stands as a permanent tribute to the nearly 95 officers who died in the line of duty. The annual service is part of National Police Week observances, giving officers, families and the community an opportunity to remember their sacrifice and service to the city.
