A Dallas police officer was injured in a hit-and-run crash early Monday that shut down part of Interstate 35E for several hours, authorities say.

The officer, who was on duty and riding a motorcycle, was struck from behind by an SUV in the northbound lanes near Inwood Road, according to police. He was thrown from the motorcycle and managed to make his way off the freeway moments before another vehicle crashed into the disabled motorcycle.

The SUV driver fled the scene, police said.

Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said in a statement that he was thankful the officer’s injuries were not life-threatening and that investigators are working to identify the driver responsible.

The crash led to the closure of northbound lanes of I-35E for several hours during the morning commute.
